Kedai Makan

WP_20150326_18_44_29_Pro Kedai Makan, according to online translator from Malay to English, means “eatery”; located on the slope of E. Olive Way on Capitol Hill, it is a to-go only restaurant.

In Seattle, we have few options with Indonesian and Malaysian food: I can only think of Malay Satay Hut, Satay and Indo Café.

I wanted to go to Kedai Makan for a very long time, but their dinner-only hour (4pm to 11pm weekday, 4pm to 2am weekends) makes it difficult for me to get there — it never seem right just to drive to Seattle to get take out.

Menu was simple: roti, murtabak (roti with lamb stuffing), potato murtabak, nasi goreng (Malaysian fried rice) and nasi ayam, chicken rice.

They have seasonal specials on the weekends include offerings such as spicy pork ribs, pork belly, trout in banana leaf, beer clams, duck legs and squid curry; late nigh menu (11pm to 2am) includes burger and spicy pork fried rice.

With our first visit, I had to try nasi goreng and nasi ayam; DH felt hungry so we added murtabak.

First up, nasi goreng, which literally means fried rice.

It was excellent with dry fried rice; not as much ingredients (tofu and some yu choy) and mostly rice, but flavor was excellent — gingery and plenty shallots; the fried egg had additive Maggie sauce on it.

Regrettably I did not have nasi goreng in Malaysia, and could not comment on its authenticity; it resembled the nasi goreng I had in Indonesia though.

Main seasoning was black pepper on the “ayam”, the Malay word for chicken, in nasi ayam; it was moist, super tender and a generous portion.

Better yet, the rice was excellent!  Awesome chicken flavor and fluffy.

I liked Kedai Makan’s rice more than Stateside’s because it had more chicken flavor.

Kedai Makan’s nasi ayam also came with a bowl of chicken soup.

I was expecting a clear chicken soup similar to Hainan chicken rice set, but this soup had much stronger and darker flavor: perhaps inert or blood was used along with soy sauce or Maggie sauce?   I could not put my fingers on the flavors, unfortunately I could not say I was a fan.

Buttery roti with soft minced lamb stuffing made up murtabak; it was very filling and tasty, again lavish portion.

The star of this dish, I thought, was the dal curry on the side for dipping — very spicy and lots of curry powder.

Simple pickled onion on the side acting as the perfect complement to the heavier meat-filled murtabak.

We went on a weekday and the line was fairly long to get food; and if I find myself in the neighborhood again, I will most certainly try their specials!
